EMDR is a psychotherapy approach designed to work with distressing and traumatic memories; it enables you to process painful memories and stimulate positive change.
Normally, the body can deal with a stressful event. However, there are occasions when your coping mechanism can be overloaded, and these events remain unprocessed. Examples of these are childhood abuse, bereavement, violence, or a tragic accident.
Without the intervention of EMDR these traumatic memories often get retriggered during events that are similar to your past experiences. This may lead to painful feelings such as anxiety, panic, anger and despair.
