Trauma and emdr

EMDR is a psychotherapy approach designed to work with distressing and traumatic memories; it enables you to process painful memories and stimulate positive change.

Normally, the body can deal with a stressful event. However, there are occasions when your coping mechanism can be overloaded, and these events remain unprocessed. Examples of these are childhood abuse, bereavement, violence, or a tragic accident.

Without the intervention of EMDR these traumatic memories often get retriggered during events that are similar to your past experiences. This may lead to painful feelings such as anxiety, panic, anger and despair.

emdr sessions

Prior to the treatment, I listen to your accounts of trauma as part of a thorough assessment. This involves asking questions about your disturbing memories. My sessions enable you to process traumatic experiences within a safe environment.

The sessions invoke positive changes in your thoughts, images, and feelings. Your disturbing memories are neutralised through sets of eye movements, which reduce the intensity of your painful feelings. This healing process may also prompt related memories to heal, which dramatically improves the desired aspects of your life.
